K-Rend & Monocouche:

Waterproof & Monocouche/through-colour renders are a type of architectural coating applied to the exterior surface of a building to provide protection against water penetration and moisture damage. We provide specialist rendering services with an emphasis on quality, visual appeal and value for money. We specialise in a subsection of Monocouche Renders;

Solid-Wall Rendering:

Applying render to a solid wall constructed external skin requires particular care and attention be paid to the types of materials being used. Standard sand and cement render mortar is not suitable as it inhibits the walls abillity to 'breathe', which traps moisture and if allowed to build up over time can cause issues damp issues on the inside. Polymer modified render mortar or lime-only based render mortar is required for any solid wall type design structures.

Cavity-Wall Rendering:

Cavity wall rendering is much less demanding of the type of materials that can be used and is widely compatible with almost any type of render on the market today. With a cavity wall constructed design, moisture doesnt require that only 'breathable' materials are overlayed and instead, the use of properly correlated airbricks/wall-vents enables air to freely pass through the internal and external brick skins.

Historical Background:

Waterproof & Monocouche/through-colour renders are a type of coating or finish applied to the exterior surface of a building to provide protection against water penetration and moisture damage.

It is commonly used on masonry walls, such as brick or concrete, to create a waterproof barrier.

Purpose:

The primary purpose of waterproof render is to prevent water from entering the underlying masonry and causing damage.

It helps to keep the interior of the building dry, protect the structural integrity of the masonry, and prevent issues such as dampness, mold growth, and deterioration.

Waterproofing Properties:

Waterproof render is designed to be impermeable to water, meaning it forms a barrier that prevents water from passing through. It is commonly used on masonry walls, such as brick or concrete, to create a waterproof barrier.

It is typically made of a mixture of sand, lime, cement and waterproof additives such as acrylic or polymer compounds. These additives enhance the waterproofing capabilities of the render.

Application:

Waterproof render is applied to the exterior surface of the masonry using a trowel or spray equipment. The surface needs to be properly prepared before application, which may involve cleaning, repairing cracks or damaged areas, and applying a suitable primer. The render is then spread evenly over the surface, often in multiple layers, to achieve the desired thickness and coverage.

Finishes and Aesthetics:

Waterproof render is available in various finishes and textures, allowing for customization and aesthetic preferences. Common finishes include smooth, textured, or patterned surfaces. Pigments can also be added to the render mixture to provide color, eliminating the need for paint or additional coatings.

Maintenance:

While waterproof and monocouche/through-colour render systems provide protection against water penetration, it is not entirely maintenance-free. Over time, it may develop cracks, chips, or wear due to exposure to the elements. Regular inspection and timely repairs are essential to ensure the render remains intact and continues to provide effective waterproofing.

Backing Coat - Stage 1:

Many of our customers have opted for our inhouse 2 layer backing-coat system, which begins with the application of a chalky, glue infused render mortar driven into a keyed / scribed wall.

Once semi-cure, this first coat is lightly 'scratched' back to reveal a flat canvas.

Backing Coat - Stage 2:

A second, stronger layer of render mortar with a fibre-glass mesh set in whilst wet, is applied over the first layer. Once fully cured, the two layer system provides high tolerance to movement / expansion / contraction / heat spots / moisture retention and impact shock. The system is also micro-porous, enabling both cavity and solid wall type constructed walls and verticals to benefit.

In-house Backing Coat:

The in-house render system puts pre-bagged technology in your hands at a fraction of the cost, enabling us to deliver a far more cost effective solution without the overhead of third party render system providers in the budget. The option to use in-house or a BS EN 15824 proprietary render system is at your discretion, and is broken down as a comparable option in written quotations on request.

Waterproof Render:

A specialised mixture of washed sharp/plastering sand, lime, cement and a range of additives that prevents moisture penetration whilst remaining micro-porous to facillitate the transfer of water particles through a semi-premeable, flexible and hard-wearing top coat layer. This type of render finish is usually painted over with a silicone or acrylic paint depending on the nature of the structure to which it has been applied however a top coat of paint is always advisable, owing to an extended lifespan in the render.

Only time-tested render techniques that have a proven track record should be employed on any rendering works. We specifically source clean, low-clay content sharp sand with a balanced mix of fine, medium and course aggregate throughout. This is a fundamental base to any quality rendering mortar. A good quality mix of sand and cement applied generously ensuring maximum adhesion to secure any loose brickwork and strengthen up the wall generally whilst creating a perfect base ready for the finishing coat. First coat is mixed for longer to entrain air within itself and improve flexibillity. Our dual layer in-house render system comprises specific additives depending on the nature of the target substrate (stone/brick/cement-board/etc). In all cases, we add extra polymer resin glue and loose fibreglass-fibres to the render mix. The second coat receives a full fibre-glass insert with a higher cement content.
