All joint openings 'raked' to a depth of approximately double the width of the joint opening; up to a maximum of 15mm on cement bedded masonry and 18mm on lime bedded masonry. Once raked out, the façade is washed down to remove dirt from the joints, ensuring a true bond with the joint filling compound.

The type of pointing mortar is generally determined by the nature of the masonry; Quick Lime (CaO), Hydraulic Lime Mortar (NHL 2 | 3.5 | 5), Hybrid Lime Mortar (8:2:1 | 6:1:1 | 5:2:1), Cement based Mortar or Linseed Fibre Mastic are some of the more commonly chosen options.

Following repointing it's generally wise to apply a waterproofing solution directly to the entire façade.

Choice on the specific type of waterproofer is again determined by the nature of the masonry.

Time Tested Render Techniques
using clean, low-clay content, graded sharp sand with lime and/or cement based binder and a wide range of optional additive to condition a mortar mix for nearly any substrate/application. These are the basic fundamentals to any quality rendering mortar.

Traditional Lime Render, Specialist Architectural Coatings, Through-Colour & Monocouche Render.
Many of our customers have opted for our inhouse 2-layer backing-coat system. Which begins with the application of a chalky, glue infused render mortar driven into a keyed / scribed wall. Once semi-cure, this first coat is lightly 'scratched' back to reveal a flat canvas.

Fibreglass reinforcement mesh
is set into the second coat whilst wet. Specialist glue is liberally applied to the mix and target area on each pass. Once cured, the two layer system provides high tolerance to movement / expansion / contraction / heat spots / moisture retention and impact shock. The system is also micro-porous, enabling both cavity and solid wall type constructed walls and verticals to benefit.

The in-house render system
puts pre-bagged technology in your hands at a fraction of the cost, enabling us to deliver a far more cost effective solution without the overhead of third party render system providers in the budget.The option to use in-house or a BS EN 15824 proprietary render system is at your discretion, and is broken down as a comparable option in written quotations on request.

Scratch Coat

Our inhouse base coat consists of two individual coats of render. This layer is a chalky, glue infused and aerated mix; applied liberally, then lightly 'scratched back' to reveal a flat canvas. A second, stronger layer is then applied.

The target areas on each layer are geneously primed with polyvinyl acetate or styrene-butadiene glue. The wet render mortar is applied with pressure, laying down the mixture and driving the mortar into the keyed and primed surface of the target area, ensuring maximum adhesion. Prior to any rendering we inspect the target area for structural integrity, securing any loose brick, block or stonework beforehand.

The second coat comprises a stronger mix with extra binder including an edge-to-edge fibreglass mesh which is set into the second coat whilst wet. This reinforces the lateral and tensile strength of the second 'render skin', tying the full face of render together with the same physics fibres bound to make cloth or rope.

Rendering

The second coat is readily paintable or more popular is a decorative architectural through-colour render coating from Weber or K-Rend, which provides an appealing aesthetic finish including improved protection from weathering and moisture ingress.

We also provide more traditional render finishes such as pebble dash with a choice of colours, and tyrolean which can be applied with a dye mixed in or as a render mortar with added waterproofer that can be painted once cured.

As a Pointing Specialist, it's our job to ensure the same type of mortar the masonry units are bedded on, goes back into the joint. We use only the highest quality colour co-ordinated pitsands, with special care and attention paid to details such as correct balance in clay-content, appropriately blended and graded aggregates and specifically selected binders historically associated with use on a given type of masonry, be it a simple cement base or one of the many variants of Lime.

Prior to any repointing works, we interrogate the mortar bedding compound to determine the characteristics and chemical composition. This approach is an absolute must in certain cases where for instance, the use of a 'northern fly-ash mixture' (black-ash) has been used in the bedding mortar.

Black-ash mortar is a fine example of a situation which necessitates the addition of certain 'pozzolanic' additives in order to correlate physical and chemical properties with the prexisting mortar beds. 'Marrying up' with the masonry bedding mortar ensures continuity in critical properties such as material PH values and physical characteristics in rates of expansion, contraction and osmotic permeabillity.
